Local Wingfoil Hand Wing Guide

HOUSTON KITEBOARDING

Quick, shop-tested wing sizing advice for local conditions.

Local Wind (What to Size For)

Our winds are typically 10–15 mph in summer/early fall and 15–25 mph in

fall/winter/spring. That means local riders benefit from a larger main wing to maximize rideable

days, especially in summer.

Best First Wing Size (Beginner Recommendation)

Most beginners buy too small. For faster takeoffs and fewer frustrating sessions, size up.

·         Under 150 lb: 5m–6m

·         150–190 lb: 6m (best first wing)

·         190–230 lb: 6m–7m

·         230 lb+: 7m–8m

Rule of thumb: if between sizes, go bigger.

Wind-to-Wing Size Cheat Sheet (Riders 160–210lb)

·         10–15 mph (Houston summer): 6m–7m

·         15–20 mph: 5m–6m

·         20–25 mph: 4m–5m

·         25+ mph: 3m–4m

Heavier riders: add +1m. Lighter riders: subtract -1m.

Choosing Your Wing Model (What We Recommend)

Wing models are not all the same. Choose based on riding style and local conditions.

Duotone Unit (Most versatile / best all-around)

Best for: learning fast, freeride, boosting, cruising

Why it works in Houston: strong low-end power and stability in lighter summer wind

Top picks: 6m for most riders, 7m for heavier riders or light-wind focus

Duotone Float (Wave/drift specialist)

·        Best for: surf style riding, flagging out, downwinders

·        Note: awesome in waves, but beginners in 10–15 mph usually progress faster

with a Unit

Slingshot Slingwing V5 (Durable, forgiving workhorse)

·        Best for: beginners, durability, value

·        Why we like it: stable pull and takes abuse while learning

North Nova (Balanced, refined freeride wing)

·        Best for: smooth power delivery, clean handling, progression

·        Great for riders wanting premium feel without being overly aggressive

Local Quiver Recommendation (2-Wing Setup)

Most local riders end up with a 2-wing quiver: a light-wind main wing plus a stronger-

wind wing.

·        Main wing: 6m–7m

·        Strong-wind wing: 4m–5m

·        Examples: 160–190 lb = 6m + 4.5/5m | 200–230 lb = 7m + 5m

The 3 Mistakes to Avoid

·         Buying too small (harder takeoffs, more falls, slower progress)

·         Sizing based on gusts instead of average wind

·         Starting with a wave wing in summer marginal wind (less low-end power)
